Meet the Artist Behind Kohola Kai Creative
In light of the release of the new 100 Reasons Project, I'd like to do a bit of an introduction to new readers. Welcome!
My name is Tracie- the girl behind Kohola Kai Creative. Being a marine mammal naturalist and general ocean nerd, my work specializes in marine wildlife such as whales, dolphins, sharks and turtles. The ocean faces many threats in the current climate, and I hope to utilize my abilities to help raise awareness and motivate people to combat these threats.
My go to medium is ink- Pigma Micron pens and liquid black and white inks. Growing up, I spent a lot of time drawing and coloring. I used to fear going too dark or too light and hid that insecurity in colors. Now, I have found comfort in the extreme of just straight black and white art; although sometimes I still fret about adding too much black. I also enjoy experimenting with watercolor, acrylic paint, colored pencil and pastels.
There is so much inspiration to be found at sea!!! I'm a whale watching and snorkeling junkie. It is such a thrill to go out on the ocean, not knowing what you'll find. Encountering wild dolphins and whales is incredibly captivating. Sometimes they are just as curious about us as we are of them and approach boats to look at the people on board- making eye contact with one of these wild creatures is just incredible. I also find a lot of inspiration in nature documentaries (i.e. Blue Planet, Racing Extinction, Ocean Giants), books and photography.
There are so many things that threatened the oceans in this day and age from plastic pollution, to overfishing and bycatch. I hope that my work will inspire people to take action when it comes to ocean conservation. There are so many things we can do in our everyday lives to help combat these things as well- check out these 5 steps to start out with!
Throughout 2019, my goal is to complete the 100 Reasons Project and continue raising awareness for the ocean's most threatened species. In addition, I would like to create species collections similar to the Blackfish Project and create art for other pressing conservation issues such as shark finning and dolphin captivity.
Support my work in the Kohola Kai Creative Shop - part of proceeds on some items are donated to conservation efforts as well!
